I realize this is a very old thread and I can only hope you'll get a notification or something from my post.

My maternal grandmother's last name was also Piening and we too wonder if we're related to this particular U-boat captain. Like him, my grandmother's ancestors are from Schleswig-Holstein and my mom claims that there's a strong resemblance between grandfather and Adolf Piening.
