All evidence points to U-233 being inbound at the time. However, why was the USS Card Task Group sent out to intercept her? What put the TG on alert for a U-boat in that area? Determining what other U-boat was in the area is the final sticking point. Also, why was that area of Maine so popular for U-boat activity? One month after the K-14 incident there was an attempt to land a saboteur, Oskar Mantel on U-1228 I believe. In Nov., 4 mos. after K-14 there was a landing of 2 saboteurs. Was there a U-boat on a recon mission in July and the K-14 was it's victim?
