<HTML>Hi Lawrence,

just a little something to add to your info: I know the motto spelt \\\"Lewwer duad ues Slaav\\\" (BTW, I think it translates as \\\"rather dead than slave\\\") from a late-19th century ballad called \\\"Pidder Lueng\\\" by Detlev von Liliencron about North Frisian resistance (on the island of Sylt) against attempts to force payments out of local residents. Using these words, one of the locals - said Pidder Lueng - killed the person trying to exact the money by shoving him into, of all things, a cauldron of boiling gruel. I\\\'d have to check again, but I\\\'m pretty sure that until some time ago the cauldron (and maybe even the words) was part of the coat-of-arms of the district of \\\"Nordfriesland\\\" / North Frisia just south-west of the Danish border.
Not sure if this is U-boat related, but here it is, anyway.

Regards, Johannes
