in addition to the excellent description by Rich Mickle, if your interest goes beyond the technical aspect, I would suggest you to read the book \"Sea devils\", which is the american/english translation of \"Decima Flottiglia Mas\" by Junio Valerio Borghese, the \"father\" and commander of that elite unit, and commander of the submarine \"Scirè\" which delivered the \"pigs\" during these missions.
The final tally of the unit was about 265.000 tons (included ships which were put out of service for some time - like the 2 battleships Rich mentioned)
