for the use of MG 42\'s I just can\'t tell. Studying some of the NARA pics, one sees sometimes MG\'s mounted on the conning tower casing. This is particularly evident on U-117. What you say about the effective range, Rainer, is particularly true: beyond 1\'000 m, this type of weapon is without any effect.

For the 4000 -4500 m effective range you cite for the 2cm/65 C/38 AA guns, I\'m a bit surprised. I was trained on Oerlikon 20mm 57 and the maximum effective range was 2000 - 2500 m, the best engagement range being between 1000 and 1500 meters.

It the first time I hear of such ranges for 20mm guns. Where does your figures come from ?
