<HTML>From reading Dönitz\'s memoirs, I would think he was perfectly aware of the limitations, and very early took steps to minimise these. Wolf Pack tactics and night surface attacks on convoys were intended to negate the advantages of enemy A/S capabilities and insure the greatest likelihood of success. So was the tactic of homing in several boats by means of instructions from headquarters.
The major limitation early in the war was simply a lack of boats. Dönitz noted that there were times in the first year of war when there might be no more than 2 boats on station in the Atlantic. To effectively prosecute the war at sea, a minimum of about 300 boats would have been needed.
