<HTML>Most navies use some variant of port/starboard and an angle with straight ahead being \"0\" and directly aft being \"180.\" One commander\'s log quoted in Dönitz\'s Memoirs uses the colour code system. \"Red\" indicates port; \"Green\" indicates starboard. Makes it easy to remember, being the same colours as the running lights. So a target 45-deg off the starboard bow would be reported as \"bearing green four-five.\" The Royal Navy also used this system. The US Navy use port and starboard.
Target bearings, of course, were given based on a 360-deg circle, with the bow of the attacking boat always at zero. In both attack, and reporting a potential target or attacker, reports are always given relative to the boat. Compass bearings don\'t give an immediately accurate location, since you have to figure out which way you\'re heading before you can use them. You save the compass for figuring out your course.
In your example, the attacker would be about green one-three-five.
