<HTML>On most U-boats there was only one cook and his only job on board was to prepair food for 50 or so men under an conditions . Some boats such as the type XIV had several since they had several ovens to bake bread for all the other U-boats they were resupplying . The cook or SMUT / SMUTJE did only the cooking , he did have some helpers peel the spuds and clean dishes all other jobs such as lookout or ammo handler was on a voluntary basis . Most men were not cooks before joining the U-boat waffe so they were given a crash course in cooking so men on a rotating watch schedual .</HTML>
