<HTML>Just a tangential question for the submarine enthusiasts pertaining to ASDIC. I read recently that a militaria dealer claimed to have \"original\" Iron Crosses First Class with brass centers because U-Boat crews didn\'t want to wear decorations with iron centers due to rusting and surface detection.
Considering that these submarines were themselves metal, and that there were several metal things, including uniform accoutrements, in the boats {aside from the fact that while brass at sea won\'t rust, it will pit and corrode}, isn\'t this an absurdity? I assume there weren\'t that many measures, aside from tactical maneuver and evasion, that a U-Boat could take to avoid ASDIC or HF/DF detection.
