<HTML>Dear Jerry,

clearly the two photographs were taken during commissioning ceremony for U 889 at its building yard Deschimag AG Weser on 4 August 1944. The small number 1256 is a serial number used by the official yard photographer. Both the numbers 1256 and 1257 (being the other shot, although no number is shown here) are related to U 889. One can also see that the CO salutes with the German Salute (Hitler Gruß) which was ordered by the CinC Grand Admiral Dönitz following the attempted coup on 20 July 1944 to show the devotion of the Kriegsmarine to Hitler. Before that date all boat commissioned with the ordinary military salute.

Copies of the photographs taken during the commissioning ceremony were usually handed out to individual crew members of the boats. Quite normally the boats and crew members surrendering at the end of the war were looted by allied personnel. So it is not surprising that photographs like this have found their way into the shelfs of former naval officers in the \'New World\'. </HTML>
