<HTML>No matter what you ferment, patotoes for vodka or grain for gin, the yeast that triggers this process will die when the alcohol % reaches 14. So, no non-distilled drink can be over 14%. So if the rum of those days was a non-distilled product, it would have been 14%. I\'m not sure of this, but I think the rum of then was stronger than that. I\'ve never heard of \'sugar-cane wine\', anyway.
There is no way in hell those sailors could have drunk well over 3 liters of hard liquor a day for 181 days, but I DO like this story! </HTML>
