“G. prefer blondes” to be followed by a sequel “but they marry brunettes” or something like that.

As to your quotation from “Das Boot” when der Alte visited das “Gespenst”, Johann, if I remember correctly, the last words of der Alte were: “steht ja auch beinahe so in den Dienstvorschriften”, “cautions”, almost like that taught by the handbook., and the way I look at it, der Alte wasn’t to happy with all of Johann’s answers, because a few times Johann evaded direct responses to the pretty precise question posed to him concerning the status of the Diesels, by addressing der Alte: “Der LI muss es wissen”, the LI would know.

Anyway, it’s a matter of interpretation..
