In January 1942, HMS Rosemonde was escorting two merchants en route to Alexandria, but lost them in stormy weather on 15 January and was expected to arrive in the Azores one week later but did not arrive and was reported missing.
On 19 January, U-581 reported a successful torpedo attack at a corvette northeast of the Azores, but was herself lost a few weeks later. Very likely, the armed trawler was sunk by this attack.
