U-203 fired its last three torpedoes at an apparently stopped steam merchant off the coast of Newfoundland between St. John's and Cape Race. All missed and only a detonation was heard behind the freighter. They assumed a hit on a patrol boat that was observed passing between the target and the coast, but a hit can not be confirmed from Allied sources, so it is more likely that a torpedo detonated in shallow waters.
