Generally, the Italian navy was composed of very capable and beautiful ships. They were lacking in leadership and fuel causing a potentially powerful weapon to be nearly useless. Just as the British made great efforts to destroy the French Navy once France capitulated, so too did the Germans when Italy surrendered. One of the few successful instances of a guided aerial bomb in WWII was delivered from a Luftwaffe plane to sink the battleship Roma.
