Hi Guys
Also it must be added here that you guys have been only stating the actual ships sunk by him which is not much but his claims were before he got the knights cross was as follows
U667 - 16/4/44 - 1 Destroyer Sunk (Torpedos actually missed)
U1023 - 9/4/45 - Damage To an 800O Grt Freighter (Torpedo's missed a Corvette)
U1023 - 19/4/45 - 1 8000 Grt Frighter Sunk (No Hits were scored)
U1023 - 23/4/45 - Damage to a 10000 Grt Freighter (Torpedo's actually damaged a 7345 grt ship, the Riverton)
U1023 - 1 Corvette Sunk (His only sinking a minesweeper of 335 tons)
So bearing in mind he was areded the Knights cross before his last kill his total claims were 1 DD sunk, 2 ships damaged for 18000 tons a one ship sunk for 8000 tons so in aprill45 he claimed about 26000 grt worth of hits which was probably more than sufficient for the last monthof the war to be awarded a knights cross look at Thompson and Lange both were awarded the Oak Leaves in Aprill/May 45 and both had sunk only small amounts of shipping but there claims were a lot higher.
I think later in the war it was a lot harder ton confirm a hit due to the overwealming Aliied air and sea power the best a uboat could do was to crash dive and get away and hope not to be detected and basically do a best guess on what results he got.
Cheers
