The Person primarily responsible for Navigation and the head of the Navigation branch was and still is the Obersteuermann, a Chief Petty Officer. on subs he also acted as third Watch Officer. He was the counterpart and the closest advisor of the Commanding Officer in all matters ofNavigation. These CHiefs are very well trained. they used the sextant all the time and they had a long and thorough training at the Steuermannsschule. Most of them later made it to Line Officers anyway and UBoatCOs like Spahr, who was Priens Obersteuermann on the Scapa Flow mission.
