Humanitarian treatment by U-boats

I would appreciate receiving information concerning examples of humanitarian treatment of surviving crewmen of sunken ships that did not involve taking them prisoner. Examples might include providing food, water, and medical help for injured men, and giving directions to the nearest land. I would also be interested in opinions of this behavior changed after the Laconia Order was issued.

Thanks,
