<HTML>The first loss of Hunley occurred on Saturday, August 29, 1863. While being towed back to her dock, after a training \"mission\" by CSS Ettawan, the Commander, Lt John Payne, accidently kicked the dive plane control in to the full down position. Because of the speed of being towed, she quickly dived with both hatches open. The craft came to rest on the bottom of the Cooper River, at 42 feet. Lt. Payne and Lt. Charles Hasker survived, (some reports state there were two other survivors.)but five sailors began their \"Eternal Patrol\". Frank Doyle, John Kelly, Michael Cane, Nicholas Davis, and Absolum Williams. In 1999, the bodies of these 5 were found in an old mariner\'s cemetery during construction work on Johnson Hagood Stadium at the Citadel military college in Charleston. (In 1948 the area was paved over as the parking lot. The headstones had been removed, but not the bodies.) On March 25, 2000, the five sailors were reburied at the plot for the second crew of the Hunley that was lost, also, in training. \"The city of Charleston had thousands of spectators at the Fort Sumter memorial on the Battery. They lined the streets for the four and a half mile trip to Magnolia Cemetery. It was a solemn procession, the five caskets being carried on five horse drawn wagons. The five sailors\' caskets were carried by pall bearers to the Hunley plot on the bank of the Cooper River. They were followed by reenactors and submarine veterans from WW2 through today.\" Now THAT is respect! May the crew of U-166 get as good. tjk </HTML>
