Hi Funkmeister,
Many thanks for the interesting info. Being ex- British Merchant Navy myself I do have a great deal of respect for the radio officers who though they didn't have an exciting job for much of the time had to know what they were doing regarding sending and receving messages in morse/voice etc. Also in the case of their own ships being torpedoed or in danger of sinking from whatever cause were often amongst the last to leave their vessel and many a brave radio operator did go down with his ship.

Assuming you are German - Were you at sea when the Pamir went down in 1957? I believe that one of her deck officers was a former WO in U-boats [en.wikipedia.org])
