Hi,

To conserve fresh water for drinking and cooking. Also there wern't the washing and showering facilities that surface ships could offer.
At the end of a patrol especially a long one they smelt of sweat, fuel oil, cooking odours and all other smells associated with those of a number of men who work and live in a confined space.
