with regard to the german torpedo failures early in the war. the reasons were manifold. the fact that the problems were the result of multiple, independent causes explains why no single remedy, such as switching from mz to az settings or changing the depth settings had resolved the problem. for an in depth report on the situation and how it was eventually overcome i would recommend you read robert c. sterns analysis in his excellent book "type v11 u-boats. regards, schalke.
