Adrian,
Thank you for your comments. The last successful invasion of England was in 1066.

You do not have to win all the battles to win the war. Some we won and some we lost but one should not loose sight of the fact that the fighting men were not just English. There were many brave men from the other countries comprising the United Kingdom.

Finally, and I believe it is true. At the end of WW2 a US warship, flying the signal "Second to None" tied up alongside a weatherbeaten British warship in the Grand Harbour, Malta.
When the Americans awoke in the morning the British ship was desplaying the name "H.M.S. NONE" painted on white sheets.
