Oh boy! These may be general questions but very complicated ones. Marine Engineers go to school for years just to get a basic understanding of these questions. There is a whole academic discipline about Naval Architecture. Myriad text books attempt to answer these “general questions"..

Check out [en.wikipedia.org] for a nice article on the basics of bouyancy.

These questions will be hard to answer completly with out delving into serious engineer geek talk.

How complete of an answer are you looking for and what do you need these answers for?

I am sure we here can take a crack at coming up with some very simplified answers but I am not sure that will satisify you.

So I guess my counter-question to you is: How much geek to you want in the answer? :)
