Forgive my ignorance, as U-boat ops aren't my area of interest (said rather sheepishly).
I have a prisoner interrogation report for a Bv 138 crew that was captured sometime after 28.07.1943. The reports states that on 28 July 1943, the aircraft was shadowing a British task force in the North Sea (reportedly between the Shetlands and the Faroes). The aircraft was based in Trondheim (2./Küstenfliegergruppe 406) and was forced down by what the crew later claimed where Beaufighters at around 1900 hours (time zone unspecified, but presumably London Standard). The pilot of the aircraft was able to put down close to a surfaced U-boat around 1930 hours which rescued three members of the crew (the pilot and flight engineer were killed when the aircraft broke up upon hitting the water). The interrogation report states that: "Some days later the U-boat was sunk and the crew rescued by the Navy."
Unfortunately, there are no clues as to which U-boat rescued the crew or which Naval craft rescued the twice-unlucky aircrew. Having checked this site for losses in late July 1943 and early August 1943, the only U-boats I can see which have crew members saved are those sunk in the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay.
If anyone has further details on which U-boat the crew was rescued by and which units a)the Bv 138 was shadowing, and b)which Allied unit engaged and sunk the U-boat, I'd be most appreciative
Thanks in advance
Adam
