Just a note of interest: On the night of Nov. 10/11 a Wellington (HF 182) of 407 (RCAF) Squadron took off to patrol the Bay of Biscay. As it never returned, it was thought that the battle with U966 might have been involved. However, all existing records (including correspondence with a surviving crew member of U966) would indicate that this a/c may have been within miles of the area, but was most likely not involved. A radio message to base reported that their ASV had picked up something on the surface, but no further reports were made. On that cold, grey night HF 182 may have been the victim of instrument failure or carelessness, which resulted in it flying "into the deck", as one 407 pilot theorized.
I worked on the research and production of a Canadian documentary, "Missing On Way Back", which was about the life of the co-pilot of HF 182, WO2 Donald Haug. However, the destruction of U966 was mentioned only in passing. A subsequent article and letter exchange published in "Flypast" magazine did not change the facts.
