Liberty Ship Lack of Durability

Because of their welded design and rapid construction, I assume that Liberty Ships were relatively easy to sink than other more stoutly constructed merchant ships. When reviewing the daily activity lists of sinkings, it appears that the Liberties frequently broke in two with very few torpedo hits. These ships were also prone to storm damage.
Do the records here support this opinion? I tried to research the topic but could not find a useful source.
