Hi John

Thats correct. Incorrect is the connection of this failure with the bombing at december 6th! The crew of U-214 noticed the malfunction of the gyro compass first at 00.42h in square EC 5164. There was a deviation to the actual position (the boat was able to determine the exact position with the nortstar at the same time) of 6 to 10 degrees. The boat went off to NE for repairs and replaced the compass ball. The mentioned air attack took place at 18.15h in EC 6918, nearly 18 houres later! At december 7th about 00.03h U-214 was in position EC 6671 as the crew noticed that the excanged comass ball was ill too. Now there was a deviation of 45 degrees which made operations in coastal waters impossible. REEDER asked by radio for a new ball and was ordered to meet U-105 again, because NISSEN had a repair kit on board.

Best regards
