Kidney disorders aboard U-boats

When reading different reports and books, I very often see references to kidney disorders among U-boat men.
For example one can read in the British interrogation report (on www.uboatarchive.net) of survivors from U-70, about Kapitänleutnant Joachim Matz:
"His period of ill-health, due to the kidney trouble so prevalent among U-boat officers...."

What was the nature of this common disorder?
- kidney stones perhaps?

Does anybody know why kidney disorders were common aboard U-boats, or were they perhaps common aboard surface ships as well?
