Hi Chippen

Perhaps this is what you are looking for:

Enigma messages were sent by radio in Morse Code.

The sender would type his message into the Enigma machine and the Enigma machine would change it (encrypt it) one character at a time based on the settings of that machine. The operator would write down the changed (encrypted) characters and when the message was complete he would send the encrypted message over the radio by Morse Code one character at a time as a series of dots and dashes.

The receiving operator would write the encrypted message down then key it into his Enigma machine using the same settings as the sender used on his Enigma machine and his Enigma machine would change the characters back to the ones the sender keyed into his Enigma machine.

For example, if the sender wanted to send “ABC” he would key that into his Enigma machine which might convert it to ZKQ based on its settings. Then “ZKQ” would be sent out by radio in Morse Code. The receiving operator back at U-boat command would write down “ZQK” as he received it then type it into his Enigma machine using the same settings the sender used and his Enigma machine would change the message back (decrypt it) to “ABC”.

Both the U-boat and U-boat Command had a code book with the Enigma machine settings for each day.

Of course it was more complicated than that but that is basically how it worked.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
