I have read vivid accounts of open bridge British warships in the North Atlantic but am very curious about how conditions were inside of U-Boats serving in the North in winter. How were they heated, what were approximate water temperatures at say at hundred meters, 150 meters ? . Was there a thermal barrier between the outer hull and interior surfaces? Fresh food could not have lasted long, was most other food canned...Excuse the change of direction. I was trying to imagine life under such adverse conditions. Is there a good printed or website giving a factual account of life on board. I realise I could never remotely relate but at least wish to try to understand these circumstances.

I will be in Chicago in March and will visit 505 in it's new setting. I hope I learn more there as well.
