Good evening Gerard.

From my own shipping experience. The engine speeds for the various orders such as Slow, Half or Full were agreed between Captain and Engineer. Full would not be the maximum that the vessel was capable of. In an emergency there would be an agreed signal, which would mean that the maximum possible would be used. It would appear that "Three Times Full Ahead" was the order that applied on that vessel.

Best wishes

Phil
