It's a long time since you asked the question, so I hope this is not too late to be of use.
The SS Toronto City charter did not begin until about 16th September at Bristol. She had previously docked at Milford Haven on the 1st September having been part of convoy HX66. The ship left Bristol on her first voyage as a weather reporter on the 3rd October, and returned on the 4th November.
The Toronto City remained at Bristol for modifications during November, but sailed on her second voyage on the 1st December. On completing her weather reporting duties she sailed on to St John's, docking there on the 30th December.
She remained based at St John's, completing another four voyages before being torpedoed during her fifth voyage by U-108 on the 1st July. In all the Toronto City completed six voyages.
Her tonnage was 2486 tons, not 3543 as given by MPC in the previous post.
There was a second ship, the SS Arakaka, which was chartered as a weather reporter a month before the Toronto City. They shared the patrols, one ship being on duty whilst the other returned top port to resupply - there were a few hiccups but it worked reasonably well. As you will be aware the Arakaka was torpedoed by U-77 on the 22nd July 1941.
There is no truth in the rumour that the two ships were deliberately targeted, it is quite clear from their KTBs that the meetings of the ships and U-boats was pure chance.
