<HTML>Hi Walter

The Torricelli had a gun battle with two destroyers (HMS Karthoum and HMS Kingston) and two sloops (HMS Shoreham and HMS Indus). They catched her on the surface north of Perim in the morning on 22 June 1940.
She was not damaged earlier by depth charges, but fought a 40 minutes (!) gun duel and fired four torpedoes at her attackers. She hit the Shoreham with one 10cm shell and the Karthoum with splinters, which caused a torpedo to explode. The destroyer caught fire and was lost.

A surfaced U-boat was not an easy target and you had to take "drastic action" to get the crew out of it.
Other actions should be mentioned:
U-405 vs. USS Borie
U-333 vs. HMS Crocus

Regards
Rainer
