You leave them in your car!?! Let's hope it never gets broken into and that bit of history is lost forever...

I believe only pre-war U-boots were marked with their boat numbers which were removed at the outbreak of hostilites.

I don't think I understand the connection you're making between a plaque that stated where the binoculars came from and whether or not U-boots had their boat number on their conning tower. Could you explain this a little more?
