Slightly off-topic perhaps, but on 30 September 1943 a general order was issued that virtually cancelled all construction work on ordered Type VIIC boats, in favour of the new Elektro boats.
Boat numbers were allocated on placement of the order; a subsequently cancelled order would leave a gap in the sequential numbering of completed boats.
Appendix 6 of Peter Sharpe's book "U-BOAT FACT FILE" (ISBN 1 85780 072 9) gives a very good guide to these cancelled U-boat orders and thereby identifies the gaps in the numbers allocated to completed boats.
