Hi Michael
Is it possible that you are searching for STRATHALLAN (http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/2528.html)?
She transported 248 Queen Alexandria Nurses to Algiers when she was torpedoed and sunk off Oran, but this was in December and the responsible U-boat escaped. The ship was a troop ship and therefore not carrying Red Cross markings.
The only case in WW2 when a German U-boat attacked a Red Cross ship was the attack of U-453 on HMHS SOMERSETSHIRE: [www.uboat.net]
Best regards
