Hi John
L'ISERE was a ship with long and interesting history. Completed in June 1866 as transport for the French Navy by Chantiers Navals à la Pointe de Caudan, Lorient. She was a lightly armed, steel-hulled, three-masted barque with steam engine, had a crew of 69 men and a displacement of 1284 tons.
The ship became famous when she brought the Statue of Liberty to New York in 1885. Disarmed in 1909 and taken out of service in 1911 she was later hulked and towed to Lorient in April 1924.
After Lorient was captured by the Germans in June 1940 they used the hulk as berth for U-boats at the mouth of the river Scorff until the bunkers were completed. During the night of 13/14 February 1943, the RAF bomber command flew the heaviest attack on Lorient during the war: 466 bombers dropped more than 1000 tons of bombs. ISERE was badly damaged by one of the bombs and towed out of the harbour to be scuttled off Locmiquélic.
Best regards
