In WW2 subs mercury was used only in some pressure gauges or level ones. Sometime mercury was on board as cargo in the blocade running U-boats. Italy was the main source from the Axis site (Amiata & Idria plants).
In WW1 it was used for fine trimming: one tank by the bow and one by the stern connected by a line with two ways pump. Be sure that mercury was eagerly salvaged before the final Uboat scuttling in the twenties.
