I'm posting this in general discussion as its not a technical question relating to how GHG worked. I am interested to know if anybody has come across any reference in U-bota ktb's regarding the use of GHG while at sea and detection ranges. I have just come across it mentioned for the first time, the U-boat commander mentioned that they only detected a ship on GHG when it was 1000 metres distant (the ship had been in visual range for several miles). The commander put the poor detection range down to disturbance in the water reducing the effectiveness of the passive array.
Has anybody read of better detection ranges or of a U-boat commander praising the benefits of having GHG onboard?
For an excellent paper written on GHG you should read the following
