Hi Paul

As far as I know this was the only time when aircraft were refueled by U-boats at sea. U-255 went to the northeast coast of Novaya Zemlya during August and September 1943 with the orders to refuel three BV-138 flying boats which then searched the Kara Sea for ice and Soviet convoys to report them for other U-boats operating in the area and the cruiser ADMIRAL HIPPER. The operation was no success as no ships were sighted due to fog and troubles with the radar aboard the flying boats. Furthermore this type of aircraft proved to be unsuited for the conditions in the Arctic Sea as two of the three participating Bv-138 were lost in accidents.

Best regards
Rainer
