Hi Paul, as far as i am aware, all U-boats, especially the larger boats would not sail unless their fuel bunkers were full, the main reason I would imagine, that they should have enough fuel on board to either complete their patrol, or if the supply boat, that they intended to use was lost, then they would have enough fuel to return or for to meet another none 'U-tanker' to give them fuel to return or continue. Regarding the use of IXC as apposed to the IXD boats, in an ideal world, if there had been sufficient numbers in service when they were needed, then no doubtedly then the IXD boats with their superior fuel capacity would have been used.Regards john
