Well, engine is divided into cylinders - they may be considered as
section. Few years ago, I had been driving my car with gasoline engine,
which later proved to be damaged - one of four cylinders was not working.
I suppose, large marine Diesel engines may act similar - they can work
with one or more cylinders out of action (due to i.e. fuel oil injection
pump damage). There would be necessary some additional actions - cuting
off fuel oil supply, opening valves or even removing piston from damaged
cylinder.
