Can anyone please tell me about u-boat activity off the coast of West Africa in 1944. 270 Squadron Coastal Command RAF, flying Sunderlands, was stationed at Apapa at that time. Their main operations were convoy escort and anti-submarine duties. They also were taking a great interest in the island of Fernando Po, now known as Bioko, which was part of Spanish Equatorial Guinea although it was off the coast of French West African territory. I have seen reference to a number of reconnaisance missions over Fernando Po by 270 Squadron in a Sunderland crew member's log book including a note of a 'secret reconnaisance' in March 1944 and 'operation Bokoko' in September 1944. Although I cannot be sure I am guessing that that they may have been searching for u-boats. It appears that these operations were not of the waters around Fernando Po but of the actual island.
