Hi John

I didn't research this convoy in all details yet, but it seems the ships from Halifax (HX-65) joined up with ships from Sydney (SHX-65) and later with more from Bermuda (BHX-65) forming one big convoy of 51 ships, escorted by only one AMC and three escort vessels. In the evening on 24 August 1940, the convoy was split in two sections, one bound for the Clyde ( HX-65B ) and the other for the east coast of the UK ( HX-65A ).

U-48 first sank LA BREA, a straggler from the main convoy HX-65, then located and followed HX-65A, attacked herself and led U-124 to this section of the convoy, which was later also attacked by German aircraft in the North Sea and lost two more ships. U-57 encountered a group of stragglers from HX-65B while operating off the North Channel and sank PECTEN.

Best regards
Rainer
