I was recently reading a Venezuelan history book covering the period 1933-1945.
In it it claims that the schooner "Nueva Altagracia", sunk by U-161,was Venezuelan.
Elsewhere it is attributed as belomging to the Dominican Republic.
A number of other incidentals seem to lean towards the Venezuelan ownership.
1) The position of her loss.
2) At least one other Venezuelan schooner had "Atltagracia" in her name.
3) Altagracia is a place on the Venezuelan Island of Isla Margarita.
Does anyone know why she was attributed as Dominican? Does it go back to U-161's original report?
Could it be that at the time of her sinking Dominca was already at war with the Axis, but Venezuela was not?
