Dear Andy,
Yes, I too lived in the Portsmouth area - in the 1950s.
I remember the submarine well, and always had the impression it was a WWI U-Boat, but I ca'nt remember why.
I believe it was either that or an Ex-RN submarine, as all the WW2 U-Boats in the UK post-war are accounted for.
It will be interesting to see if anyone else has any memories of it.
