I have compiled a list of the Ellerman Line war losses and have received the following request with regard to the sinking of 'CITY OF ATHENS' in 1942.

Would you have a reliable reference for the fact that U-179 sank the City of Athens? I have SAN records that say it was U-504. They even have what appears to be a quote from the log of the U-504. Both U- boat.net and u-boatwaffe.net state it was U-179. It would be nice to get some clarification. I also have two books which state it was U- 504. Seeing as U-179 was sunk the same evening one wonders how the claim can be verified as it's logs were lost.

I note from this site the following:

The sinking was witnessed by U-504 (Poske) from some distance, which avoided the area because a Hudson aircraft appeared shortly before the second torpedo hit.

I would be very grateful if anyone can add to the debate.

Regards
