Freddy....
...It was normal that the neckerchief was always kept knotted and tied with a permanently affixed starched white ribbon (white securing bow) tied around the knot. Many units and ship's captains would not permit this habit and required fastening the knot every time the neckerchief would be worn. When worn, the knot was invisibly secured at it's reverse by the slash ribbons tied to the knot's ribbon.
To achive a "fuller" looking knot, a folded handkerchief would be folded with the silk neckerchief, and pressed down before forming the knot. The white ribbon (white securing bow) would be starched customarily with white toothpaste. The bow of the white ribbon was called "fly" (Fliege). These were time honored habits!
