Hi Barbro,

Note that the Kongshaug was torpedoed by an E-boat, not a U-boat.

If you are certain the ship he was on was Norwegian and that it was sunk by a U-boat you can go to the “Ships hit by U-boats” section of the site (http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/), select “Norwegian” as the country and click “Search”. You will get a list of all Norwegian ships hit by U-boats. The list contains the date of each attack so you can just pick the ships in the list that were hit in 1945. That list isn’t very long.

Also note that there were all kinds of arrangements made with various countries about the manning of ships. Sometimes these ships were sailed under a different flag. Many Brit and American ships had at least partial Norwegian crews too so he could have been on a “Norwegian” ship that isn’t listed as a Norwegian ship in the above list. It is a starting point though.

Also you might ask Siri Lawson (the owner of the [www.warsailors.com] site) for help. She is Norwegian and may well have resources or advice she can share with you as to how to research this. She is real nice, extremely knowledgeable and generally happy to help when she can.

Good luck.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
